Micro Electro Mechanical Systems, or briefly Microsystems, are μ-scale devices produced with techniques similar to those used for Integrated Circuits which can sense the environment and/or act on it. Nowadays many MEMS sensors like accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, magnetometers, are installed on smartphones, laptops, and other consumer products. Many engineering fields like the biomedical, aeronautical, electronic are being revolutionized by the introduction of nano and micro technologies. Interesting applications and great opportunities for research advancements can also be found in mechanical, structural and civil engineering.
Internet of Things (IOT) and the new Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) are new trends that are made possible by low power and miniaturized MEMS which allow connections of many devices in wireless networks.
The activity of the group started in 2002 motivated by a cooperation with an important industry of the MEMS sector. Since then, the group worked extensively on various issues related to the world of micromechanics and MEMS.
The main expertise of the group are: modelling and simulation; mechanical reliability of microsytems; experimental mechanical characterization through on-chip testing methodologies; damping and non-linear phenomena in microsystems; design of inertial sensors; design of microactuators.
The environment of Politecnico di Milano offers to the group the unique opportunity to cooperate with other teams of Politecnico involved in MEMS researches. In particular, strong cooperations are now active with other research groups of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Materials Engineering; the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering; the Department of Mechanics. This multidisciplinary environment put the MEMS group in the optimal conditions to afford in a comprehensive way the complex and fascinating world of Microsystems.
